Artificial Christmas Trees: The Breakdown
- Can you see the center pole? If that's a yes, don't buy it! A high-quality artificial Christmas tree should look exactly like the real thing.
- Examine tree "branch tips" closely. Look for color and texture variations that mimic a real tree. If shopping online, make sure you see a "super-zoom" photo.
- Avoid "hooked" branch designs. Buy a tree with "hinged" branch construction for easy, fast setup and a more authentic look and feel to your tree.
- Look for clear lights and colored lights, or even better, a tree that has both!
- Avoid LED lights: they don’t emit the warm glow associated with tree lights.
- Make sure lights are UL-approved and “twist-proof” to prevent burnouts.
- Make sure light warranty is backed by the tree manufacturer. Otherwise, you’ll be passed on to a third party.
- Look for a metal tree stand with rubber feet to prevent floor scratches.
- Make sure retailer is using high-resolution photos, preferably with "super-zoom" so you can inspect the details of the tree. Don’t get cheated by low-quality pictures!
- Tree length ranges from four to 12 feet. The most common height is 7.5 feet.
- Standard tree shape is "full". Smaller trees are called "narrow" or "slim"
- When buying artificial wreaths or garlands for your home, make sure they match your tree. And when decorating outdoors, double-check the quality of lights so you know they’ll survive the cold and snow!
Your artificial Christmas tree should look almost exactly like the real thing. If it looks like a pole with branches, it’s not of sufficient quality to warrant consideration!
